HomeTags Understanding Tags in English Grammar byPrasun Goswami -Friday, January 10, 2025 TAGS TAGS PGDRMC 10-01-2025 TAGS Tags are a kind of clause that refers to the verb in the sentence's main clause but lacks a lexical verb. The auxiliary verbs 'be', 'do', 'have', lexical verb 'be', or a modal verb, and a subject (usually a pronoun) make up tags. They could be affirmative or negative in polarity, and their word sequence could be declarative or interrogative. Question tags, directive tags, statement tags (sometimes called copy tags), and exclamation tags are the four primary categories of tags: Question tags: He’s a doctor, isn’t he? We haven’t shown you this, have we? You’ve met Dolly, have you? Directive tags: Open the window, will you? Don’t go out tonight, will you? Statement tags: I’m angry, I am. She was very generous, Susana was. He’s not so short, John isn’t. Exclamation tags: How odd, isn’t it! What a sight that was, wasn’t it!
